TE AROHA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Tb Auoha, Friday. AuooTjeleven o'clock yesterday forenoon a two-roomed cottage, with lean-to attached, owned and occupied by Mr G. M. Bnrke, nt the outskirts of the town on the road to Waiorongomai was burned down. When the fire broke out Mrs Burke and her infant were the only persons in the house. She had left the kitchen, where she had been cooking, to attend to the child in the bedroom, and during her short absence the flames had somehow caught the woodwork near the fireplace. The smoke was observed by Mr Burke and some neighbours, who were only a short distance away, and prompt efforts were made to subdue the fire, but there being no water conveniently at hand the flames obtained the mastery, and everything inside the house except a few trifling articles was consumed. . The building was insured for £60, and the furniture, piano, and personal effects for £100, both in the New Zealand Company's office. Mr Burke estimates his loss at £50 over the insurance. At the Police Court yesterday, before J. F. E. Wright, Esq., J.P., William Henry Jones, veterinary surgeon, was charged by Sergeant Emmerson, with tittering a valueless cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Aroha, for £6 6«, bearing tho signature of a person named McCaskill and dated September 24th. The accused had purchased some good* from Mr Edwards, storekeeper, and had tendered the cheque in paymont, receiving part of the balance back in cash. On presenting the cheque at the bank it was found there was no account in the name attached. Sergeant Emmerson asked that the prisoner might be remanded for a week to enable the police to procure further evidence and the request was granted. The report that appeared in your issue of the 28th ultimo giving a statement of the proceedings of the Domain Board meeting held on the 25th, and at which only Messrs Gavin, Ahier, and Quinn were present, was not quite complete. After the transaction of the business, for which the meeting had been called, there was gome private discussion which resulted in the withdrawal of the privilege of free r.ocrss to the baths, which tho board had lung pre-
viously grunted voluntarily to representatives of the press. This may bo taken fes un act of retaliation for their temerity in daring to criticise tho doings of the board in thoir appointment of Frafunsor Cad man and other matters.
