TE AROHA TRAMWAY.

Thk following is the manager's report on the tramway road at Wednesday's meeting of the Piako County Council :—: — Wai'ironfjomai, September 27th, 188 G.

To tub Chaihmxn anm) Mkmbkks, Piako County Council. Gentlemkn,— l have the honour to submit the following report on the working of your tramway for the past four weeks, or during the time I have had chare:*. On the 31st of August, I went over the line and took an inventory of the property a copy of which I now attach to this report. On the Ist of September, I took charge of the line, and I at once proceeded to cut down the expenses by reducing the staff ; I discharged the carpenter on that date, and on the 4th I discharged another mm and put one horse out to grass, and I have been working the line sinco that date with five men and one boy including myself, and I find with that number and the three horses I could send from 16 to 20 trucks per day to the battery, but at present I am not al>le to obtain that number, as there are 8o few miners at work, as we have not been kept fully employed in running quartz, I put the men in the spare time to repair the line, and get ready for shifting the brake on Butler's Spur, and had I been able to get sufficient qimitz from the mines to enable to to stop the line for two days. I would have had the brake shifted but I am obliged to run some down every day in order to keep the battery going. I have now got the trenches cut and all ready to shift when I get an opportunity, which lam afraid I won't get until the battery stop*, to clean up at the end of their month. I have had to cover the brakas on Butler's and May Que9n spurs with iron, in order to keep the r<tin off, for when the winter seta in the brakes will not hold, and the trucks pro at such great speed that they were liable to be smashed every time. The cost of this covering will not exceed £2 10s, including our own labour. We had one slight slip during the bad weather, which wa> on the horse grade between Butler's and Mriry Queen t>purs. It took the men about two hours t<» clear. There was no other damage during the month. The blacksmith his been kept going durmg his spare time the horses, repairing tracks, and making iron woik of the rollers for Butler* spur. Th<* amount «f revenue for the four weeks is £71 13s 3d, which wa-< made as follows: — Quaitz, £0G1oh; firewood, £3 6s Gd ; up freight, £1 Us 0.1. The expenditure for tho same peiiod is £(>3 Gj 7d, which includes wages, horse feed, iron, coal, etc., and leaves a credit balance of £3 Gs Bd. I wish to remind you th.it th* contract for tho supply of horse feed was up when I took charge, and that it would bo advisable to call for tenders for six months supply as soon as possible. I also wish to inform you that the men cutting firewood complain that the charge for sending it down is too high, as it has only to be sent over one grade, while quartz is sent the full length of the line, and the charge is only one shilling per truck more. It would be advisable to make a scale of charges according to the distance carried. I regret that I cannot send a report on the track from Waiorongomai creek to Tui claims, as I have been kepi too busy on the line, and have not been able to go over the supposed line, and though I am well acquainted with the country, I would not attempt to report on the track without carefully examining the route, which I will do at my fiist opportunity, and will forward report immediately after. — I remain, gentlemen, your obedient servant, Thomas Gavin, Manager. It was resolved to request the manager to draw up a scale of charges for carrying firewood and submit it to the council at the next meeting. It was also decided to authorise the manager to call for tenders for horse feed.

Tenders wanted for painting Alpha Hotel and stables, Kihikihi. P. Hogan, minor, Waiorongomai, and C. Day, farmer, Hautapu, have tiled petitions in bankruptcy. First meeting of creditors advertised in this issue. We are requested to draw attention to the fact that the well-known firm of Stewart Dawson and Co., have removed their Auckland branch from 195 to 94 Qupen-Street. Yes ! It is certainly true.
