LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

[BT TELEGRAPH— PUKS3 ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. Judge Haiivey consulted with the Government prior to his departure for Auckland, to commence the Stark purchase enquiry. At four o'clock this afternoon, Charles Chnymol, wine merchant, recently adjudicated a bankrupt, was aireßted on thrpe informations for foiging and issuing certificates for deposit of go id 3 in the Queen's Bond. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, th« Gear Meat Preserving and Refrigerating Company were, charged with having sold native game after the oxpiration of seven days from the closing of the se-ison. From the evidence it appeared that the game in question had been killed before the close of the season, and been through the freezing chamber, but the police contended that unless the game was protected it would open a wide door to poaching. For the defence it was not denied that the game had been sold, but maintained that the Act really intended to prevent the destruction of game during the breeding season, and as the defendant had obtained the game lawfully they were entitled to dispose »»f it. After argument his Worship said that the fact that the pr >cess of nature had been arrested, did not appear to alter the character of the thing sold ; that it seemed to him that the sale of game out of season, whether in a frozen state or not, was an offence under the statute. A fine of Is and costs was inflicted. The charges of larceny preferred against the Cook fimiJy occupied the Magistrate's Court again to-day. One charge against the father for stealing property belonging to the Government was dismissed. Two of the male children, aged, respectively, 11 and 8 years, were ordered to be sent to the Burnham Industrial School until attaining the age of fifteen, and were also ordered to be privately whipped. The remaining charges against Mr and Mrs Cook will be heard this evening.
