LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH-OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Fire. Auckland, Wednesday Night. A cottage at Avondale owned by Mr Monarty, warder at the Asylum, was burned down to-day. Tt Was insured for £300 in the South British.
Visit of Mr Ballance. Mr Ballance received a nnmber of deputations to-day on various matters. The first deputation received was that of John Lundon and the Crown Land Commissioner re the village settlements. They remained with Mr Ballanco for a considerable time with the result that everything connected with the scheme was satisfactorily arranged. The Defence Minister consented to all the proposals, and at 3 o'clock he again received Mr Tole and Mr Percy Smith, Assistant Surveyor-General. This morning, the Mayor of Parnell, Crs. Kidd, Lundon, and the Crown Lands Commissioner interviewed Mr Ballance. The result was that an agreement was entered into between- them that the Government should accept the offer of the Parnell Borough Endowments at Hokianga to be used for a village settlement. A deputation of the settlers of Tuakau District, consisting of Major Harris, Messrs Pollen, Logan and Hawk, waitad upon Mr Ballance for the purpose of bringing before him the necessity that existed for narrowing the Waikato river at the punt crossing. Mr Ballance listened to the reasons addressed by the deputation, and promised to favourably consider the matter.
Bad News from Kimberly. Aucklandern returned from Kimberly give a deplorable account of the condition of the miners on the so-called goldfield.
The Wreck near Napier. News received from the scene of the wreck of the Cleopatra states that the beach has been searched, and the settlements visited for miles, but no tidings obtained of the crew. A dress and a flannel petticoat marked "1.Z." were found amongst the wreckage. The marine surveyor for the New Zealand Insurance Company reports as follows :— " Held survey. Hull partly broken. Tongued and grooved timber more or less damaged, and washing out of her."
