Waihi.
Paeroa, Tuesday. Silverton.-— Mr Moore reports 10 head of stampers working at the* Martha battery on very fair stone. The show on the plates prophecies a return of about 1 £ozs. to the ton. Union.— As the roads from the mine to the battery are in such a bad condition, not more than five head can be utilised at the battery for the Union stuff. The stone now being treated is of rather low grade, so it is reported but for all that a fair return is expected. The reef is 6ft. wide, and is improving in size and quality. The parcel of stone that was sent to Swansea, Wales, some six months ago, has been reported as of small value. The same stone was sent to California, and was highly spoken of at that place. I am informed on creditable authority, however, that the stone can be more profitably treated at Waihi, taking all expenses for transit, &c, into confederation. It is well that this should be the case, as, if this wholesale exportation of auriferous ore should continue, the colony would be a great loser by the transaction. As it is, the county of o'iinemuri is come £150 out of pocket by the loss of gold duty on quart/, sent from the local goldfields. Winner. — The manager is still driving for the main reef, which is expected shortly. Several jrood leaders have been cut, but it has beeu decided not to work upon them until the main reef has been prospected. Martha Extkndkd. — Crushing is pfoceeding by fits and starts. Kindly stone to hand from lower workings. The roads around here are still in an extremely bad condition. A team of three heavy draught horse* are required to pull along an empty dray. This will not be wondered at when it is stated that the stiff clay is belly deep, without any exaggeration, and in some bad placed, the Kahu crossing for instance, it is even deeper.
