WELLINGTON, Saturday. A thunderstorm passed over Wellington this morning, and steady rain since.
CH RISTC H URCH, Saturday. The steamer Triumph, which leaves for Calcutta this evening, will take 241 horses, shipped on account of John Grigg, Haukers. and Jarvis. They are all light horses suitable for army purposes or for bugyy and tandem work, and are useful-looking animals. The vessel's lower deck accommodation for horses has been improved, and better ventilation provided.
OAMARU, Saturday. Mr John Falconer, Mayor of Oamaru, and one of the early settlers, died this morning, aged 62 yeirg.
DUNEDIN, Saturday. Capt. Baldwin h«as withdrawn from the candidature for Duoedin Central. Monday. It is likely that the contest for the Dunedin Central seat will be confined to the hon Mr Dick and Mr Hutchinson, ex- member for Wellington South. The former in that case is likely to have an easy win.
INVERCARGILL, Saturday. The Mandeville Hotel, in the Gore district, was burnt down yesterday morning. The building was insured for £600 in the New Zealand office, half of which was re-insured iv the South British.
