HAMILTON BOROUGH ELECTION.

The polling for the return of three candidates to the Borough Council of Hamilton took place on Thursday at the council chatnbei s. There were five candidates, and the event created no little stir, though the utmost good feeling and good order pre- \ ailed. Much difference of opinion existed as to the result, but as will be seen below, the three winning candidates got in By a considerable majority. The result of the polling was as follows : — C. Tippen 104 0. J. W. Barton 08 F. J. Yon Stunner 87 J. Parr 49 S. Davis 39 The following amusing anticipatory report of the " running," the production of a '* Blue Gown," was issued on a card about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. It will be noted that the " tip " was absolutely correct : —

THE BOKOUGH STEEPLECHASE. The Betting : 3 to 1 against Tip and Malt and Hops ; 4 to 1 against Yon, Bricky, and Co-op. Fne candidates faced "Pisciculture" (who acted as starter), punctually at 0. Upon the f.ill of the flag the Anglesea candiduto inmped off with the lead, cicely followed by Co-op, Tip, Malt and Hop*, and Yon. This order was maintained until reaching the Public Buildings, when the concrete barricade proved too much for Bricky, and he dropped out of the race. His friends assert that had this obstacle been constructed of bricks he would have had no difficulty in surmounting it. Co-op worked hard, but, this being his maiden etf ort, he was outpaced by the others. Yon, on reaching the Domain lands, made tv grand effort, but as this part of the course had not been put down in grass it did not suit the "little 'un," and he dropped back into third place. The race for first place now lay between Tip and Malt and Hops, and a grand race ensued home. Tip and the Young Benicia Boy literally tore along, but the last fence (constructed of the grant from the sports committee to the library) was too much for the "big'un," and Tip was quickest over, winning a good race by a neck, Yon a good third ; Bricky being still stuck in the concrete. •3 . !
