ALEXANDRA NEWS. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT .]
Anoi'iikh old native chief has passed away. At Whatiwhatihoe died last week, Tawhia, a brother of the Lite well known chief Takerci te Kan, who was said by the native to have been of the highest lank of .my of the race. Unlike his brother, h«\ve\er, Tavvhia 'v.\i comparatively little known ouL-ide his own people, being of a very quiet disposition, and not given, like many of the well-known chiefs (who pose as such amongst the Europeans) to as*.. m this undoubted rank. The u->ual tangi was held over him, but no great expense incurred, for I believe the best of nil reasons, the hnpecuniosity of his friend-. The school building being erected at Kopua for the native's, is fast approaching completion, under the hands of the contiactor, Mi Nelson. Why this building was erected, when money is said t> be so scarce in the hands of the (lovornment, it is hard to say as thete aie bat \eiv tew natives residing tlii'ie or likely to be, the whole country in th i^ duection Ivmii^ in the possession of that nui->ance the sweet briar. A family or two of half castes aie only likely to attend. A woi>e situation for the natives generally could hardly have been chosen. The travelling public visiting Alexandra will be glad to hear that then* is now a w ell horsed conveyance plying between heie am' Te Awamutu. Mi I' inch, of the Alexandra 1 Intel, now supplies this long felt want, and has the cordial wislus of all foi the .success of his enteipiKse. A football match was aitangod for on Saturday List, between the lojal tram and Te Aw.unutu, but in tonseijueiuv of the inclement ueatlu'i, th' 1 expected \isitoisdid not turn up.
