Wellington, Wednesday. The Premier goes South for several weeks. The Supreme Court was occupied to-day hearing: an action brought by Cha««. Alfred Richards, headmaster of tho Hutt public school, against Peter Speedy, of Belmont, farmer, for alleged slanderous utterances made at a public meeting at the Lower Hutt in May last by the defendant in reference to plaintiffs behaviour towards certain children attending the .school. The damages claimed are fixed at £500. Defendant admitted the language used, but pleaded privilege, and the case was not concluded when the court adjourned for the day. A Supplementary Gazette issued to-day contains a classified list of teachets holding certificates under the Education Act. At the inquest to-d.»y on the body of Geo. Bradford Donoghue, who died from a dose of opium, the jury returned a verdict of felo-de-se by taking poison.
