TE AROHA. [ FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Te AttOHA, Monday. A qenkbal meeting of the members of tho Gordon Special Settlement Association was held on Saturday afternoon in the Public Hall at Waiorongomai, for the purpose of drawing for tho lands. Mr B. Montague occupied the chair, and explained the arrangements made by the committee as to the manner of drawing. As the total area of land in the block was not sufficient to afford to each member the full acreage respectively applied for, and as the sections varied very much in size, it> had been decided that all the sections over 100 acres in extent should be apportioned to the members who liad applied for 150 ; sections rangipg from 50 to 100 acres to members who had applied for 100 ; and sections under 50 acres in extent to those who had applied for 50. The arrangement met with general approval at being the best that could be? made under the circumstances, and after the appointment of four uninterested persons (Messrs Ferguson, Gillies, Mills and Smith) as scrutineers, the drawings proceeded with the following results :— Block VII, Section lfi, 150 a. Or. Op., Mr W. D. O'Keefe ; section 17, 158 a. lr. 22p., M. Robertson ; section 18, 88a. 3r. 31p., D. McLeod ; section 19, 78a. 3r. 35p., Jas. West; section 20, 100 a. 2r. Op., Thos. Mnnro ; section 2, 103 a, T. Donovan ; section 3, 105 a, Jas. Morton; section 4, 103 a, Edmund Cookson ; section 5, 99a 3r, McLeod; section C, 101 a, 2r, C. Murphy ; section 7, 90a 2v, A. Forzmann ; section 8, 100 a lr, George Gapes ; section 9, 40a lr, Robert Michael. Very little business was done after the drawing, as there was a rush of members to view the map of the blocks, and see how their sections were situated A hasty vote of thanks to the scrutineers and chairman terminated the proceedings. The monthly meeting of the Domain Board was held on Saturday evening. Present : Messrs Wilson (chairman), Ahier, Gavin, and Quinn. The principal business was the consideration of a letter received from Professor C.idman, who offered (on certain condition*^ hifi nervicen to the board, as hydropathist and electropatlmt, gratuitously for a period of nix months. After a lengthy discussion of the subject in its various bearings the following reso lution w.is passed :—": — " That the application of Professor Cad man to be appointed hydropathist to the board for a period of
nix months without salary, and in terms of hii application he granted, subject to the Approval of the (government ; and that the Government bo requested to consider the application favourably." It in made a condition of the appointment that the electric appliances at present in uae at No. I 3 bath shall not be removed, and that they shall be as heretofore accessible to every person who may wish to use them privately. A letter was also received from Mr R. Bronan applying for the sole right tor a term of years to hang advertisements in the bath rooms after the style adopted »t railway stations. The matter evoked considerable discussion, but it was ultimately resolved " that the application be granted for a period of five years at the rate of £2 per annum for the first three years, and £3 per annum for the last two, the term to commence on the lxt October, and the charge to be paid quarterly in advance. The clerk intimated that the tender of Mr E. A. Pavitt, at £8 Bs, for the survey of the additional grounds to be taken into the domain, had been accepted. Instructions were given to the clerk to write to Dr. J. L. Campbell conveying to him the best thanks of the b*ard for his handsome present of rare and valuable trees. These trees hare been estimated by persons competent to judge an worth £50, and will form an important ornament to the ground. Accounts for wages to the amount ef £21 0s lOd were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated. Since the setting in of the recent spell of bad weather there seems to have been a cry almost everywhere of the bad roads, but it may safely be said that in no place is there more reason for it than in this facility. The state of our streets has long been a reproach to the place, but now their condition is simply disgraceful. The footpaths are in places almost as bad as the middle of the roads, and to females especially are nearly impassable. % Surely the county council might at least instruct their engineer to spend £2 or l £3 in making a decent path to the post-office and courthouse. A few loads of gravel would be sufficient to put the side- walk to these places in some kind of order, and such a trifling concession as this might certainly be granted without a grudge.
