MR WELLS AND THE CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH.

TO THE KDITOR. Sir, — By your valuable journal of to-day I observe that Mr Wells has promulgated his decision re the borough muddle. Mu*t we accept this dictum of Mr Wells' as final ? Is he sufficiently qualified to givo an opinion on this somewhat complicated question? When will his presumption cease? Quousque abutore patientia nostra ? Assuming Mr Wells' ukase as conclusive, we will then have a borough constituted with five councillors and a mayor ! This indeed would be a novelty, and an edifying result of Mr Wells' phenomenal discriminating faculty. Would it not be better and more satisfactory to leave the question to some gentleman who is sufficiently qualified, and whose profession it is to treat with such matters ?— I am, &c, Ne Sutok Ultra Crefidam. Cambridge, 2nd September, 1886. ■

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — What a jumble Messrs Russell and . Wells have ernt our borough in. Two reputed clever fellows, you know, and J.P.s too. Now, to clench the matter, Mr Wells pours forth his dictum to the world after very carefully " going into the matter," and what a blunder has he made! Where will Wells stop (if he starts thus) when he is elected mayor? Neither of these gentlemen shine forth as legal advisers. Their opinions are always to be had cheap, and consequently nasty. Now, Wells, old boy, take my advice, and stick to your iron and glue, or it will not stick to you, and leave the law to the devil's own. Same to you, Mr Russell. Farewell, adieu ! Russell and Well*. — I am, yours obediently, Water Scheme.
