WESTPORT, Wednesday. Michael Driscoll. employed at the harnour railway works, was killed by a falling tree.
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Sir Robert Stout visited the School of Agriculture tins afternoon, and ex» pressed himself pleased with the institution and the manner in which it was con* ducted. He left for Wellington in the Penguin to-night. The Canterbury Society of Arts held its annual meeting to day, when it appeared that the society were in a flourishing condition, having a balance to its credit of over £300. This morning a deputation of the unemployed waited on the Premier, who promised to find work for the married men. He suggested that they should try to settle under the village settlement system. The Premier was interviewed to-day by a deputation from the Protection Association. He said he held that the Customs tariff should be revised, so as to provide — first, for revenue from indirect taxation, and secondly for the protection and fostering of industries that vrere likely to succeed. He laughingly evaded a question as to the intention of Government with respect to a policy of protection. The Weather here is wet again.
DUNE DIN, Tuesday. The extent of the injuries received by Mr Rignold in falling down a trap at the theatre are not definately known yet. He will be unable to play this week. Another lire occurred in the auburbs at Palmerston South last evening, when a large ei>rht-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr James Curie, a farmer, was totally destroyed. The buildings were insured for £700 ; of this amount £300 was in the Norwich Union.
