The following wero the caees heard brfore Mr Noithcroft, R.M., and Mr Win. Haddow, J.P., at the witting of the court yesterday :—Civil: ,T. F. Cock.s v. Jame.s Clarke, claim for 700 quicks, balance of 1000 said to have been sold to defendant. Judgment for defendant, plaintiff to pay costs, 15s. Two other cases, J. F. Cocks v. J. Munro, and Ward and Hethennqton v. P. Ferguson, were adjourned till the next sitting of the court. Criminal: R. Parr v. C. Gallaghar. Tn this case defendant was charged with assaulting the plaintiff on tho 2Sth August by ntnking him on the mouth and pulling his whiskers. After hearing the evidenco of witnesses, who substantiated the charge and proved the use of threatening language to defendant, the bench inflicted a tine of 10.s, with coHts, £3 13a Gd, in default 14 days' imprisonment, the defendaut to find two fiecurities of £10 each, and himself in £25 that he will keep the peace for a period of nix months. R. Parr v. A. Cleary. This was another assault case arising out of the former one, and the charge having been proved, a penalty of 10s was inflicted, with costs, £2 4s b'd ; m default 14 days' imprisonment. Tn both instances the fines were at once paid. Mr W. M. Hny appeared for plaintiff in the two ca^es. Intelligence has been received here that Mr Stratford, formerly Warden on the Otngo and West Coast goldfields, and recently Resident Magistrate hi tho Wairarapa district, has been appointed R.M. and Warden for the Thames, and will immediately enter upon the duties of his office in the district to which he has been transferiod. At the meeting of the Waitoa Road Board, held on Saturday last, the tender of C. Collins for forming fitf chains of the Waiorongomai-M.umgakawa road, with bridges was accepted, the price being £79 19a 2d. The striking of the proposed rate of \ in the £ wai posponed until next meeting of the board. Tho Pahee Hotel has changed hands, Mr James Warren having been succeeded by Mr George Ebert. on Monday night, and were well patronised. Pact of the coin puny left yesterday en route for Waikato, and the remainder proceed today. Last night Professor Lio Medo gave one of his interesting lectures in the Public Hall, but owing to the adverse weather mid other cause* the attendance wan not ao largo m it would ha\e been under more favourable circumstances.
