THE PROPOSED FARMER'S PROTECTION SOCIETY.

TO THK KDITOR. Siu f—l f — I am thoroughly in accord with Mr )i. 1). L. Duff us as to the formation of a "Fanner's Protection Society,"" and consider the circumstances in which the majority of farmers find themselves at present shews the urgent need of such a society to look after their interests commercially and politically. Statistics prove that agriculturists number throe-fifths of the population, and they are acknowledged to be the mainstay of every land. Yet in this part ot the colony at least they are too apathetic to take combined action, and are therefore preyed upon by all who lay themselves out to do so. To cite the single instance of fat cattle, which are reported by the auctioneers to sell at so much per lOOlbs. The weight being always a matter of very rough guess is very rough on the fanner, wh« well knows the great loss he sustains. When we see all kinds of trade societies to even a "Lumper's Union" in existence it is surely tune for the farmer to awake from his lethargy, so that he may obtain as well as assert his lights, and I earnestly hope that the formation of a Farmer's Protection Society may be as warmly taken up, as the i'uportance of the matter deserves and brought to a successful issue. Trusting that you, Mr Editor, may give this a place in your valuable columns, and give it your further advocacy.— l remain, yours etc., J ,T. K. McDonald. Okete, 23rd August, 18«( S.
