London, August 20. In order to expedite business, the. (Government are opposing all private Bills ; but Dr. Ahearne, who went home to forward the objects of the Northern (Queensland Separation League, believes that a Constitution Act, giving Northern Queensland the deuired power, is being drafted. It is announced that the War Office will grant commissions in regiments of the line to colonial militia officers. Tho Tunes advocates the appointment of a. commission, consisting of .skilled workmen, to make inquiries as to the nature of articles which the colonies purchase from America. Sir Graham Berry had an interview with Mr Stanhope, Secretary for the Colonies at which he strongly urged that an understanding should be come to with the French Government to fix the withdrawal of the French troops from the New Hebrides. 1 It is currently asserted that tho French Government intend to retain the New Hebrides, pending the settlement of other matters in dispute between tho English and the French Governments. Sir Mathew Whito Ridley, who w,b Financial Secretary to tho Tiea-mrei in tho late Conservative Government, has been ejected for Blackpool, in place of Sir F. A. Stanley, President of the Board of Trade, who has been raised to the Peerage. The Australiam mails, per P. and O. Co.'s Shannon, which left Melbourne on July 13th, were delivered to-day, via Brindisi. Arrived at Plymouth, to-day: The P. and 0. Co.'s Tasmania (from Melbourne, July 9.) - Mr Gladstone leaves next month on a visit to Bavaria. Articles have been signed by Gandaur and Beach for a sculling match for £1000 and the championship of the world.
