THE JIMARU POISONING CASE.
I BY TKLEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Timahu, Monday. Ox Saturday two more informations were laid against Thoa. Hall, the prisoner n«>\v in custody for attempted murder. The informations wore laid by (4. L. Meason, prisoner's partner in (commission, etc.) business. One information charges Hall fh.it he did on December Bth,' 1885, at Tiiiraru, feloniously attempt to defraud by forging a certain transfer from one Michael Milton to Hull and Meason. -The second information charges the prisoner named -that, he did on July Kith, 188(5, at Timaru, feloniously forge a certain promissory note for the payment' of €225. The charges will bo taken on Monday. Thos. Hall and Margaret Houston, were brought up at- the /Resident Magistrate's Court Mm morning. There was great excitement and the court was crowded long before 11 o'clock, while outside a large number of people assembled. Mr J. S. Beswiclc R.M., and Messrs E. Elworthy and H. J. Lecren J.P., were on tne bench. Mr J. W. White, Crown Prosecutor, applied for seven days remand t on account iof Prbfessor Black's inability to bo i present, as he was obliged to go Invercargill on a Supreme Court cuac to-mqrrow, and he could not be here till Saturday at the earliest. Mr Joynt, for Hall, strongly opposed the remand on the score of common hens? and, justice. He argued that Professor Black's evidence was only that of an expert, and he understood that plenty of witnesses as to the facts were present. These should be examined, as until some evidence was given the defence could not decide what to do. ' It was unfair to the accused, who should be regarded as innocent until proved guilty. The remand should not bo granted unless good reason was shown, which had not been done by Mr White. Mr Hay, on behalf of Houston, also protested against the remand. Mr White said Professor Black's evidence must be taken first bef<ire that of the local medical experts. He deprecated the insinuation of unworthy motives put forward by Mr Joynt. The bench said they would take the assurance of the Crown Prosecutor that a remand was necessary. Mr Joynt protested that a remand \yas unnecessary, but without avail, tnd n remand till Monday next was granted, Mr White stating that all the available evidence would be gone on with on that day but the case could not be completed, as Mrs Hall would be called as a witness, and the medical information was to the effect that she would not bo able to bo in court for a fortnight. Hall was then charged on four informations for forgery, and remanded for a week. The prisoner," were then removed to the gaol, a groat crowd witnessing their departure. Some slight hissing took place.
