NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD MATTERS.
TO TUT. KPirOH. Sm, — As there has been some discussion in your columns over tho above matters, and a meeting of i.itepayers held to consider them, I would like, with your permission, to make a few remarks. The main iwu* involved at the meeting referred to was whether the road from Ciawford's to McCutchen's should bo proceeded with or not, and it w,b .shown that Mr Corboy, a short time ago, objected to the form.itiou of this road. But this was pi e\ ions to the grant being made for hi-, own road of £30. Since then he has advocated the construction of the road in dispute, which a majority of the boird were apainst, their reaM)n being that there w ere not sufficient funds available. At Satuid.iy's meeting Mr Corboy endeavoured to show that the board were in funds to a considerable amount by counting this year's rate, which is only just struck, and the .subsidy on last year's i.ites, which has not yet even been applied for, wheieas in reality, the board has not sufficient funds in h ind to pay present liabilities, uncompleted contracts, etc. It was also pointed out at the meeting that the grant for Mr Corboy's road, to be spent as that gentleman thought proper was illegal, the act clearly stating that anything above £'20 must be tendered for. The board are much to blame in this matter ; but, as the chairman is the oldest and most e\peiienced member, he is justly entitled to the lion's «,hare. Attention was also drawn at thi.s meeting to Mr Frazers road formation contract, let to Mr Jones. It appears that Mr Cot boy measured and passed this work 150 chains, and the contractor was paid for that amount, but it was stated on Saturday that there are only 1 10 chain:?. A motion was therefore proposed and seconded that Mr Sandes, with three member*, of the board, be appointed to measure the work. The chairman, however, over ruled this motion, on the ground that it had nothing to do with the business for which the meeting was called, and so the matter rests. Rit it will be to Mr Corboy's interest, who is so jealous of the reputation of the board, to have this cleared up at once, .is kucli mistakes will not add to the prestige of the board or tend to inspire ratepayers with confidence in then as a body. It mavha\e the good effect, however, of leading to the appointment of a qualified engineer.— l am, Sir, yours obediently, A Haiti* u kr.
A small dairy farm is ad\crti:>ed for salr or lease. Mr J. J. O'Hrien invites tenders up to the 30th inst., for carting 100 tons of ijood-. trom the Te Awamutu railwa'N station to Otorolnn^a.
