THE SLIGO RIOTS.

t?ROM our Home files ( we learn that the Wotaof Sligo were brougKt about by some £vil disposed persons damaging me stone fence round the Catholic Cathedra^ The ProtestantsoF the town offered a reward "Of £100 for the discovery of the perpptra- . ttira of the outrage. A largely attended : meeting of Protestants was held, at which gYea£ indignation was eiepVessea at the insult which had been' offered to the Catholics. Among other speakers the Rdv. MV Jackson said that this meeting did the 'f»irOtestanta of Sligo very much credit. They were right to express their utmost indignation against an act so wanton and so unprovoked in such a place as the town of Sligo. He quite agreed wfth what the previous speakers had said. From his own 'observation for many years he could say that he bad been treated most courteously and most kindly, by all his Roman Catholic fellowcountrymen. He had held to hia own principles, and t has asserted them at the Jiustiugs again and again. He was never insuTted or treated unkindly by anybody. He hoped that this breeze would soon pass away, and that the perpetrator or perpetrators of this crime might be convicted — (applause) — and might bo conflignly punished. The criminals might, perhaps cajl themselves Protestants, but he asserted that no Protestant ever advanced Protestantism by crime or outrage. With regard to the outrages of Saturday night he had nothing to say except that he regretted them.
