OHINEMURI GOLDFIELD. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Waihi. Pakroa, Thursday. Union. AThe recent return from this mine 253(iz. for KJS tons, when one bears in mind that 20 tons of the best stuff in the parcel has been iilready picked out, spestks volumes for the bullion producing capabilities of the Waihi mines. Moreover, it must be considered that the gold is of extremely good quality, being worth from £2 15dto£3 per oz., and also that the quartz was put through the stampers bolus bolus, a good deal of it being worth little or nothing. Altogether shareholders are to be congratulated. ,
Martha Extexdkd. — The return of 100 oz. for one month's crushing in at about the rate of lOdwts. to the ton. This old mine keeps on the even tenour of its way, and if dividends are rare, calls happily ate more so. It is, however, rather a pity that the company which has now a good surplus in hand does not declare a dividend. A judicious dividend now and again revives confidence in the goidtield wonderfully, and even if a little pinching was to be done it is worth while.
Silvkhton.—Reef rather poor in face of dri\e. There are however hopes of an improvement shortly. Tunnel in 225 feet
altogether. Roskmont.—The tunnel which runs through the Union Company's ground is now in first-class country, and should tjie reef which is being driven for be found in like country, it should consist of first-class
quartz. Winxkr.—Mr iCersey Cooper hopes to ha> c the reef in another 100 feet of driving.
Km hbrley.—Nothing yet to hand in prospector's drive. Very hard country being experienced.
General News. Mrs Sullivan, nee Bartle, late of Rangioahia, Waikato, sent in her resignation as schoolmistress to the Paeroa school on Wednesday. Mr Commissioner Barton will be in Paeroa this week, in order to take evidence re the tenure of the Paeroa township leasehold, which is now the inalienable property of the natives, and only held on a lease, which expires in four years. The tradespeople have several times petitioned Parliament to remove the restrictions on the sale of the township site in order that they may acquire the fee simple. The visit of Mr Barton is the result. Mr Grace, M.H.R., presented a petition last weok from several Waihi and Katikati people, praying for the leconstructiou of the Waihi bridge. " It is generally thought th.it the bridge will be of small benefit w hen rebuilt. It is hoped that by the time this is in type the Woodstock funnice will be fired up, and smelting operations begun. A dial of btmgling is evidenced in the way things are being done at this establishment, and it is sincerly to be wished that no further muddle will be made.
