Sydxev, August 10. The Gorman warship Albatross lias returned from a cruise in the Paoific Seas. She reports that she shelled villages on several islands where Germans had been murdered, and killed and wounded forty natives. The Government have now under consideration a plan 5 for the celebration of the centenary of New South Wales.

IReceJved August 11, 1 15 p.m.] Melbourne, August 11. In the Legislative Assembly, this morning' at 3 o'clock, the Government proposals to increase the duty on woollens to twenty per • cent., instead of twenty-five, as demanded by the Opposition, was carried by 46 to 43.

A public meeting was held today to consider the question of holding an exhibition, celebrating the centenary of the colony. A series of resolutions were proposed and adopted in favour of holding an exhibition at Sydney in 1888.

The manager of the National | Mortgage Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited), reports on the local market as follows : — Shipping wheat, 5s 2d to 5s 3d per bushel ; malting l»arley is a shade firmer at 4s to -is 3d ; New Zealand oats, fine sorts, no material change, if anything weaker, 3s 3d to 3s 4d.
