CATTLE STEALING. Another Case.
Dennis Ml'rph\, on three charges of cattle stealing, wan brought up on remand at the Hamilton Police C«mrt on Thursday. For the defence John Deegan deposed that about three years ago he sold some calves to a man named Harding. They were branded "D" behind the shouldpr. Harding deposed that he subsequently sold two head ofyoung cattle to the prisoner, one being roan in colour and the other yellow and white. The Magistrate committed the prisoner for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. Another case of cattle stealing has since cropped up, and in this, unlike the other, there is a vein of humour. It seems that when Constable Murray was on his was $o Ohaupo to make enquiries in respect of tfle Murphy case he overtook, at Camp's corner, a man named Thomas Carter, who was driving a mob of cattle to the sale. The constable rode beside Carter as far as the Narrows bridge and engaged in conversation with him, little suspecting that he would soon be obliged to arrest him. Carter gave the history of the beasts he ! was driving, and said he was realising all his property in order to get away to Kimberley as soon as possible. The cattle comprising the mob, consisting of five cows and one heifer, are now alleged to be the property of Thomas Hannon of Hautapu. A warrant was subsequently taken out for the arrest of Carter, who by the bye sold the cattle under the name of ' George Johnson, and he was arrested by Constable Murray, on Thursday, in the Piakn district. Carter- was brought up at the Hamilton Police Court, yesterday, before His' Worship the, Mayor (Mr Graham), and remanded for eight days to Cambridge. Nc» evidence was taken, but the prisoner made a statement to the effect that he was the victim of an absurd practical joke.— lt is understood that there is another person concerned in the qffence.
