CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The Mayor of Cluistehureh has re* ceived an answer from the Minister for Public Works, stating that the Government will relieve the present distress amongst the unemployed, by putting more intn to work on the city reserves. Tne distress is not \ery widespread at present. A monster conversazione in connection with theChriatchurch Industrial Asaocia* tion Mas opened this evening by the Mayor. Friday. A Chinannn named Ah Sow, who has been residing in Southbridge for some time, committed suicide last night at about ten o'clock by taking a dose of opium. Deceased was about 50 years old.
DUXEDIX, Thursday. The doc, bird, and poultry show today was \ery successful, The entries amounted to 133,'}. H. Driver took the cup for the largest jui/e taker, Dealer, Christchnrch, being second. There were a large number of entiles from other districts, especially in dogs, which are to be judged on .Saturday. Wednesday, The rule was made absolute by Mr Justice Williams in the divorce case Wakrfielrf v. Wakefield and another. A trolly loaded with timber, in which a man named Henry Lewis was sitting, was precipitated into the sea at the Heads. Lewis received such severe injuries that his recovery is doubtful. It is stated that the directors of the Waimea Pla ns Railway are not likely to sell the railway on the terms as altered by Parliament.
