MR PARNELL AND IRISH INDEPENDENCE.

Mr P. H. Bagenell writes to The Times on May 26th :— Silt,— Mr Parneil ha" indirectly repudiated the words attributed to him at Cincinnati, and docla res it a calumny to _ say he used them. I believer lam responsible for having first republished, in 1880, in a pamphlet called "Parnellism Unveiled," long since out of print, the remarkable quotaI tion alluded t«», so perhaps you will allow mo to htate where it is to bo found. In 1880 I studied the contents of the Irish World very attentively, and observed how very carefully Mr Parnell's movements and sayings wore reported by his friend Mr Ford, the well-known editor of that paper. In the i«sue of March (Jth, 1880, there are six columns' of matter about Mr Parncll's meetings. Nearly two columns are devoted to the meeting at Cincinnati, and Mr Parnell's speech is reported in the first person. The concluding portion of it runs as follows :—": — " We are engaged in a great work in Ireland. That work is going to succeed. Justice and the many against injustice and the few must win. (Applause.) With your help in keeping our people alive tins winter, 1 feel confident wo shall kill the Irish landlord system. (Applause.) And when we have given Ireland to the people of Ireland wo shall have laid the foundation upon which to build our Irit>h nation. (Loud applause.) The feudal tenure and the rule of the minority have been the corner-stone of English misrule. Pull out that corner-stone, break it up, and you undermine English mjsefoverntnent. (Applause). When we have undermined English mi^government we have paved the way for Ireland "to take her place among the nations of the earth. (Applause.) And let us not forget that it is the ultimate goal at which all we Irishmen aim. None of us — whether we are in America or in Ireland, or wherever we may be — will be satisfied until we have destroyed the last link which keeps Ireland bound to England. (Applause.)"

The Cock Tavern in Fleet-strekt.— On Tuesday, May 18th, the materials of the historical Cock Tavern in Fleet-street, London, were sold by Messrs Horne, Son, and Eversfield, and the ancient tavern, which it i.s stated has remained internally unaltered since the days of James 1., will shortly be a thing uf the past. The site has been pm chased by the Bank of England for their intended new offices in connection with the Royal Courts of Justice and the administration of Chancery funds. Other buildings between Bell-yard and Chancerylane have also been purchased by the Bank authorities, and, among ancient land marks of past ages, the house where Izaak Walton cirried on the business of a hosier and shirtm.ikcr for 20 years has been demolished to clear the site for the Bank's new premises. Yes ! It is certainly true. Ask any of y )ur friends who have purchased there. Garlick and Cranwell have numerous unasked for and vjry favourable commendations from country customers on their excellent packing of Furniture, Crockery, and Glass, &c. Ladies and pentlomen about to furnish should remember that Gailuk and Cra'iwell'*- t« rm» '""heap Furnishinjj Wh.irchouse of AuaunJ.
