— A new volume of poems by Victor Hugo, entitled "La Fin de Satin," and containing 0,000 versus, is announced. —The German Emperor has paid 24,000f. for the original manuscript of Schneckenburger's *• Wacht am Rhein," whicii had come into the possession of a forest manager, Manuel by name, at Burgdorf. — MrT. Wemyss Reid has, at the request of Mrs Forster, undertaken to write a memoir of the late Mr W. X Forster The biography will deilwith his personal and private life as well as with his political career. — Mr J. A. Symonds has finished his "lien Jonson " for the " English Worthies'' series, and is now engaged on a life of "Sir l'hilip Sidney" for the " English Men of Letters" series. — Professor Matzner, of Berlin, the great authority in Germany on English philology, wii-hes to dispose of his valuable library of works on the philology of European languages. — As we expected, the statement of the Cincinnati Enquirer that "Living or Dead" was not th^ woik of Hugh Conway has been indignantly denied by the solicitors to his executors. — Mr Slason Thompson, of the Chicago Daily News, compiler of "The Humbler Poets," is revising that work ■with a view of indicating throughout the authorship of the anonymous poems ; a task by no means small, since many of the pieces are of English (British) origin, and in many cases bear only initial signatures in the original point. —It is proposed to hold in the autumn an elaborate Anglo Jewish Exhibition, which will trace and illustrate, archseolofrio «lly and artistically, the career of the Hebrew race in England since the landing of it* fiist, member. — A third copy of Charles Limb'M " Beauty and the Beast " has been founJ. Unlike the remaining" two copies, it possesses a titlcpage. This shows tint it is a second edition, published by William Jduksm and Co., Strand, in 1820. — A subject catalogue of the new hooka received at the British Mu.senm during; the last five j-ears, ha 9 been completed by Mr Forte-cue, the j>uperin teucUnt of the reading-rooms. It will shortly bo published by order of the tru-tees. — One of the Bo>ton papers, in reference to Dr E^-v.tri Ever^t Hale I**1 ** nixty-fourth biithday, which w.is pleasantly ct*lebriit)d -v isv weeks ag), declarimr th it Dr. Hale is, with possibly one exception, the rao.st industrious author in the United States. The exception appears to be Mr Ho wells.
