Poetry. EVENING REVERIE.

The sun is has set ; his gorgeous hues Are fading into gi ;\v, And thedeep'ning shades of twilight Tell of depai ting day. Oh ! blessed hour, when noise and din Of busy labour cease ! When enters in the solemn night, And o'er the earth reigns peace. O'er silent land and dusky sky, Is spread her evening pall — And the dreamer starts at the weird sound Of the night bird's piercing call. Enkindled by an unseen hand, The first bright star appears ; Resplendent Nature bows her head, And bathes the earth in teats. But see ! In yonder Eastern sky, A flood of light is seen ; And forth in peeiless majesty, Sails Luna — gentle queen. And while on valley, hill and glade, Her beams their radiance throw, A myriad feelings o'er the soul, In quick succession flow. T«8 ! as she roves from East to West, In unobtrusive flight, What scenes her soft rays dwell upon In the silent hours of night ! And oft. perchance, some breaking heart Gains solace from her smile, Which seems to say, " Keep bravely on, "Tib but a little while." Refreshment to the weary brain The soothing zephyrs bear, And fraught with fragrant odours is The balmy evening air. The drooping flowers are hushed to sleep By the murmured lullaby Of yonder stream, that wend* its way To the rolling, restless sea. E'en now, as here alone I muse, It seems to me a booh, That, while in seeming solitude With Nature I commune — My raptures may perhaps be shared By dear ones far away ; That, as on Nature's loveliness Bright streams of moonlight play — Hearts that I love unite with mine, As on God's works they gaze. In wafting upward unto Him A heartfelt hymn of praise. E.S.D. Cambridge West, July 12, 1886. !
