The latest returns show :— - Conservatives 307 Unionists 72 Gladatonites 172 Parnellites SI A supporter of Mr Gladstone was returned for the Otley division, We.st Riding, Yorkshire, represented in last Parliament by Sir Andrew Fairbaiin (Liberal). Conservative candidates have been elected for the following seats, held in the last Parliament by Liberals :— Ka.st Renfrewshire, Houghton, Durham, Huntingdon, Loughborough, in Leicestershire. Unionist candidates have been elected to represent Noithwich, in Cheshire, and the Allure South division, seats held formerly by Bruuner and Mason, Liberals. The Conservatives have gained seats at Buckingham, Peeblen, and Thornbury. in Glouccbtershire, rej)lacing former Liberal member? —Captain Verney, Sir Charles Tennent, and Edward Howard. Mr Alexander McArthur, Liberal, who represented Leicester in the last Parliament, has been elected by a very small majority for the Btickroso divibion, in Yorkshire E.ist Riding. Mr GKidhtono has arrived in London. A private meeting of Unionists and Conservative leaders is to be held to formulate an Irish policy. It is believed that Mr Chamberlain and the Marquis of Hartington will not join the meeting. It is understood that a Conservative Minfctiy would be prepared to offer friendly help to Ireland. The Radicals are pressing Mr Gladstone not to resign until the Unionists compel him.
