CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

TllE oidi'iai v monthly mcetirg of the Camliiidgo School Committee was held in tho Ciiterum ] Intel, Cainbudgi 1 ,, on Tuesday evening. Present: Mc-mn S.ii <ri»n t (chair mm), Houghtnn, I feu itl, .md IJussdl. The nii'iiHi s t>t the ]_»n*\ i«>u^ mci'tinj* were eonhimed as read. Tlu» ,\iimi il rep>:l from the Education Depaitmcut, Wellington, was leceived. Tho Chan man icportjd thab the now cla-s-room w.is finished, and passed by Mr Allwiight, who leported \oiy favourably on the highly ctoditablo manner in which Mr Rob:it Ken* had curried out his contract. The fuirituro for the new classMimi had been ordered, but had not yet aimed. The Chairman stated that he had written to the Boa id of .Education re books for the school library, bnt had received no reply. He would now rarne that Messrs Rishworth and Stewart be asked to prepare a list of books suitable for the library to forward to the board for their approval. — Carried. Mr S. Rout, agent of tho Auckland Scripture (Jiit Association, wrote offering, if a mvii of 21s was contributed by the committee, to forward books to the value of two guineas. Mr Russell said it was piobable that tho books which would be sent would be of a religions nature, which would tend to upset the secular element iv the piesent system of education, which is at present purely secular, and which he belies ed in maintaining. However, a list of the books which would be sent might be asked for. It was resolved to do this, the list when received to be submitted to Mr Stewart for approval. The following gentlemen were named as oindidates for the vacant seat in the Board of Education : — Messrs S. Bright, Thomas CnnipbeP, <}, T. Keightley, and R. Udy. On the motion of Mr Houghton it was decided that the committee give their vote to Mr Udy. Mr Russell said that, as the Hamilton High School was likely to close befoie, long, and that as Wstikato mv.st have an institution of the kind somewhere, could not some meansbe devised so as to utilise the facilities ottered by the C.unbi idge High School in such a manner as to attract those now attending the Hamilton High School, when that .school should cloy?, and by that means not only to provide a school in place of the one about to fall through, but to form the nucleus of a high .school for Waikato m the futuie. The mattei might be thought over so as to have definite proposition brought forward at a future meeting. If a larger attendance could be obtained, pos-ibly the fees might be reduced, so as to offer an inducement to parents of children residing in Hamilton. The Chairman thought that if they could secure the attendance of over twenty pupils they could afford an assistant master who he thought would prove a greater attraction than reduced fees. The Chairman said the old school buildings would soon require painting, and he thought the only chance of having the woik done would bo to raise half the amount required locally, when the board would probably contribute the other half. It was suggested that a. children's entertainment might be got up for this purpose. The following accounts were passed for payment :--W. B. Soutter, £1 17s ; J. Meredith, Is ; J. Houghton and Sons, 12s Id ; (i. W. Russell, 7*. ; S. Fletcher, £2 12s. This was all the business.
