An eight roomed house owned and occupied by (x. A. Tapper, situated in Cumberland-street, was burned down this afternoon. The fire originated through a child playing with fire iti & lumlier room. The house was insured for £400 in the South British and the furniture for £340 in the same office. The owner estimates bis loss at over £300 above the insurance. At present 300 are engaged on relief work pro\ h\ei\ for the unemployed. This docs not include those who held a meeting yesterday, and asked for work to ket'p themselves and families from starvation, numbering probably close oa 200. The half-yearly balance-sheet of the Colonial Bsink shows the profits for the year, after making the usual allowance, amount to £17,900. Adding.to this the balance from the last, half-year, and deducting the tax on note circulation, and £520 donation to the guarantee association, there is available 120,419. Out of this it is proposed to pay a dividend of 7 per cent per annum on the paid-up capital, add £1000 to the reserve fund, and carry forward £5419. Mr John Roberts is the only candidate for the vacancy on the directorate.
