OHINEMURI AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
A mkktixo of the ibove association was hold at Paeroa on Saturday evening last, Mr R. A. Wright in the chiir. The committee brought up their report and a draft code of rules), &c, which were adopted. The following suggestions in re the Codlin Moth from various members were formulated, and ordered to be sent to the county council, requesting that body to forward «atne to Government : — (a). Every occupier or owner of tin orchard not declared or known to be infected with the Codlin Moth shall be rated i of a penny for each tree contained within his or their orchard, (b). Every occupipr or owner of an orchard declared or known to be infected with the Codlin Moth shall be rated \ of a penny for each tree contained within his or their orchard, (c). A tree within the meaning of these suggestions to be a fruit-bearing plant, or if not in bearing to be at least five years old. (d). Government shall appoint chief rangers or inspectors, local bodies shall appoint sub-rangers or inspectors, (c). All rates levied shall be collected by the rate collector of the local body, who shall keep account of such, pay such into the nearest bank to the credit of Government, and forward account to the Secretary of the Treasury. (f). Government only t« operate on fund. (q). Fund so created to be called the Codlin Moth Fund, and to be appropriated as follows :— (1.) For general expenses, advertising, ifcc. (2.) Salaries of inspectors rangers, &c. (3.) For the purpose of supplying orchard ustn and others with lime, sulphur, hellebore, pai is green, potabh, and other useful insecticides at a low cost and on an affirmation that such insecticides are only to be used for the purpose of destroying the Codlin Moth or other insects and fungoid pests of the orchard, (h.) Occupiers or owners of orchards to notify annually the number of trees in their possession to the Inspector under a penalty of £ — . (i.) Occupiers or owners of orchards to notify to Inspector, if appointed, or to local body the pi^sence of the Codlin Moth immediately on being aware of same, under penalty of £—. (j.) In older to augment the Codlin Moth Fund and not to draw upon the Consolidated Fund this association also recommend a custom duty of per 1b on all fruit imported from Au-trilian, T.ismanian, and American j»oits, and a fuither duty of Is per cwt on all jams, sweetened or unsweetened fruit pulp and similar ma nifactured fruits imported into the colony.
