A ROWDY NATIVE.
Last Friday ni«ht tho ' Kihikihi police arrested a native named Maniapoto, son of Xe -Poto, awell-known chitrfj for being drunk and disorderly and for a brutal and -aewuilt on a younp nathe Mdniaporo bears a bacT character as a rough, troublesome individual, even amongst bis own people.- The youug woman lvas severely cut about the faco and head, and very much bruised about her person. On being arrested he resitted the police, and attempted to incite his tribe to re.scue him. The prisoner was taken to Te Aw.iniutu, and on Saturday was brought before Messrs Mandeno and Rutherford, J.F., («u three charges of assault, resisting the police, smd being drunk nnd dUordeily. He was fined £2 6s on the fir«t, or one month's imprisonment, and £3 10s on the other two charges, or seven days. His father offered to pay the fines, which was accepted on the condition that a prohibition order, be ,\t once taken out against the prisoner, which Was done. It is considered that he was let* off with very light punishment, as for his cowardly treatment of the girl alone he merited a few months' incarceration in Mount Eden.
