CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD.
Thk monthly meeting of this board was held on Saturday, tho following members being present :— -Mes-rs J.ib. Taylor (chairman), Smith, Forrest, Thomson, and Graham. Rvte.— The chairman thought the time was come when they could d-> with.i smallei rate. The board had spent a lot of money, yet hald a pood credit balance. Last veai the rate was and ga\o thorn £474. There was now a balance of £202 13s Id, and a debenture of 111)8 to meet. --Mr Forrest s.ud if only rate wan made they would be sure tohaVe u deficiency and would ha\eto meet the ratepayers next year in debt. He did not thinic it worth while attending the meetings if there wns <mly a rate t<» spend.— Mr J. P. Thomson moved that tho rate be Id in the €. If they had only a }d rate there would be nothing to spend for workt. after paying clencal expenses and the dobenture.—Seconded by .Mr Forrest and carried. DocohektV* Ro.\n, M.\usg\kawa.— Mr Forrest drew tho board's attention to the »tate of this road. Mr D<HH>hei ty had been very patient and ho thought the road .should be gravelled.— The chairman said that only two settlers, Me«r-. Dougherty and H.illy would bo benefited.— lt was lesohed that Mr Forrest should ascei tain the cost of the repairs and report at the next meeting. Main Diuins.— Mr Forrest referred to the drain from Cowlings corner to the brickyard. He thought if the drain w.v. made tlm board's property no one would dare interfere with it without permission, and moved that it be gazetted .» main public drain. He had often tiied to get this done, and now made another attempt.— Mr Smith thought it should be, under the board's control, as it was a source of great expense to them.— The engineer was mitructed to prepare plan and description of the drain and gazette it as a- main drain. Koai> at Hautapu SrAnos.— Mr Thomson drew- attention to the bad state of the road froru-the town belt to Hautapu station and near the cemetery, which was getting much broken up.— Resolved that a surfaceman be put on to do the necessary repairs. Engineer's REPoar.— The engineer in his 1 report stated that tho embankment <at tneNarrows wns finished, and loconuneuded that it be fenced in as cattle were continually breaking it down. Last week a mob had done damage to it to the extent of over £2. The cost of fencing would be £20 8s Cd.— Mr Smith strongly supported the recommendation, and moved that the fencing be' done. — Mr Forrest moved that the work bo tendered for, as he thought it could be done for less money.— This was seconded by Mr Thomson.— The Chairman thought that calling for tenders was unnecessary and a waste of time. He seconded the original motion, which was carried. Road at Tamaheke.— Mr Pennington wrote, complaining of the large pool of surface water and mud at the road corner near his store. — The engineer was instiucted to have this attended to. Road Maintenance.— -Mr Forrest pro- " posed that tenders be c.vlled for the maintenance of the main road from the town belt to Heyton's corner, and fur gra\elhng it three miles in length.— Agieed to. Accounts.— The following accounts were passed for payment :— T. VV.ittain, £1 11s ; The W.ukato Times, £4 17-; (J. W. Russell, £4 -Is ; T. Vincent, £1 os ; W. Soutter, £2 2s ; J. S. Bond, 12s lid ;J. McPher-on, £."» ; Minogue, £3 (is Id ;T. (i. S.mdes, £4 ( .)s 3d.— My Foireht made strong objections to the payment of the last account. It was unreasonable to think he would gi\e his tune for less, and he for on* would not ,i-»k him to do it.— The matter then dropped, .md the meeting teiminatad.
