General News. At a late meeting of the schflol committp© for Ohinemuri regret \va% expressed at the loss of the services of Mr La Prelle, who has been appointed to the Rarigiaohia school, Waikato. The committee recorded its appreciation of Mr La Prelle, and wished him every success in his new sphere of labour. A fancy dress ball was held in the Paeroa Public Hall on Saturday evening last, and was a great success. Owing to the rapid progress of Ohinemuri a syndicate of tradesmen is being formed with the object of purchasing and maintaining si direct steamer to Auckland for passengers and goods. We have two regular lines running, and this will make the third. It is on the card* that a Warden and Resident Magistrate's court-house will shortly be erected, which will be used also as a County Office. The export of quartz and mineral ore from Ohinemuri for reduction at other places is causing * serious loss of county revenue in gold duty. But for the intervention of Mr F. Cock, county chairman, the duty on about 1500oz. of gold sent from Ohinemuri to the La Monte Furnace, Thames, would have been annexed by the Thames County Council as lawful spoil. It has, however, been decided that gold duty is payable to the local body of the place where the gold is first obtained.
What should we do without the Irish members ? One of them npaet the House of Commons by stating that, in the case of li>i\se3 of 999 yeara, renewal* were comparatively rare.
