Mr Bryce, Under-Secretnry for Foreign Affairs, replying to a question slated that M. de Freycinet, tho French 'Premier, had ronewed the assurances previously given that France would respect the independence of the New Hebrides, but that Lord Lyons, the British Ambassador, had been instructed to coll Attention to the fact that hointing the flag in that group hud occasioned great excitement in the Australian colonies. Mr Bryce further states that the captain of H.M.k. Undine had brcen ordered to proceed to the New Hebrides to report to the Government as to the actual state of affairs in the group. Sir Robert Herbert, Premier, and Undersecretary for the colonies has informed Mr Graham Berry, the Agent-General for Victoria, that the Government have decided to forward a request to the French Government that the New Hebrides should be evacuated by it* troops as noon an thn fear of ontragei on French subjects has been removed.
