His Loss was Gain. — Popular Transatlantic divines find a robbery from their house or fheir own pockets rather a profitable loss than otherwise, judging from the experience of the well-known Henry Ward Beecher. Lately Mr Beecher had his pocket picked of his watch, and the newspapers duly announced the loss and commiserated the loser. The sympathising president of a well-known watch company immediately sent Mr Beecher a very handsome watch ; shortly after came a similar present from an admiring friend ; then the City of Boston voted Mr Beecher a splendid watch in return for his public services ; ami, lastly, back came the original timekeeper. " Now," dryly remarks the New York Christian Union, "Mr Beecher is anxious to have mouthing else stolen."
