GOVERNMENT TELEGRAMS.
The Government has sent; us the following by the telegraphist at Rotorua : — The following information has been received from the north :— News is just to hand that there is no hope forTapahf.ro, T« A*iki, and Morea, native settlements. 70 Maoris are know n to be at the latter place. I expect that the deaths of notives will exceed 100. I fear that Mr H. P. Bnrt, who is supnosed _to have camped near the foot of Mount" Tarawera that night on his way to Galatea,, has perished. His two horses have been found on their way home. The craters on Kuawatakia, and its twin cone are eonting volumes of dense smoke. Rotomahana Lake is a seething waving mast of water. The clouds of steam from which are several thousand feet high. Numbers of willing hands are digging for bodies at Wairoa io-day. An attempt will however, be made to examine the native settlements I have mentioned. Mcßae informs me that he oxtinguwhed at least ten balls ot fare which came crashing through hU roof during the night, igniting everything they came in contact with. The Tuhounoigi tribe was quite destitute of clothing, food, and whares. I will telegraph again this evening. Telegraphist, Rotorua.
