Loud Reports and Heavy Earthquakes.
Tauranga, 8 a.m. Loud reports and heavy earthquakes began here at 2.15 a.ni. and continued until 5 a.in. 'Jhe town of Tauranga is in total darkness, with thick clouds of sulphurous matter (gypsum) in the air. Mount Tarawera, Rotomahana, is reported to have broken out and the eruption is going on continuously. Several lives are reported to be lost at Wairoa. The eruption caused intense excitement, people have been leaving Rotorua for Tauranga since midnight. Special steamers have been applied for to the Mayor of Auckland to convey people away from here (Tauranga), if necessary. The Hazzard tamily, schoolmaster at Rotomahana, are reported to have been blown up and perished. Relief parties have been organised here to go to the assistance of the Rotorua people, who are in a complete state of panic. Telegraphic communication interrupted to Opotiki and Whakatane.
All Quiet at Taupo. TAUPO, 12 Noon. Our own correspondent telegraphs — " No volcanic disturbance here."
To the Rescue. AUCKLAND, Noon. A special train Ims left Auckland for Oxford to convey Rotorua 1 refugees to Auckland.
