On tho motion for going into Committee of Supply, M.ijor Atkinson said after the vote of yesterday, the Opposition would not attempt iiny factious opposition, but they threw the responsibility on the Guv eminent of making 1 eductions. The House then went into Committee of Supply, foi the consideration of the Estimates. Vote £7710, General I'o-t-ofnce, carried. Chief orfices and sub-offices, t12;{,303. Mr Hatch suggested th.it tlio classification system should be •idoj)ted m this department. Sir J. Vogel waid he proposed to go into the classification question during the recent, to sec if it could bo adopted witli advan- , tage. He was favourable to the system. Air Duncan moved that the vote be reduced by £1100. lfc contended that the Chief Postmaster at Timaru should not receive a larger ealary than that officer at Oamaru. Sir Julius Vogel paid the business at Timaru H'.r. one third moie than that at O.unaru. beside-, the Timaru postmaster w.is an older officer in the service. The whole sitting up to ten o'clock was occupied by discussion on the Bill. A laice number of clauses were passed without any material alteiation of clause 401), tint the Council may contribute fiuid^ for «chool buildings. Mr Hatch moved to strike out the ClrlllbC. Lost by 47 to 15. The remainder of the Bill was then passed, leaving only some postponed clauses to be dealt with. Mr Lirn.ich moved tne second reading of the Coal Mines Bill, tho object of which was to place the mines under separate enactments. Mr Connolly regretted to see clauses prov iding for employment of women and ehildieu m the mines. Motion agiead to. Sir K. Messrs Huisthoubo and Cowan favoured the second reading. Mr Lika said important alterations were sometimes found in these consolidation measures. Sir R.
