THE CENSUS RETURNS FOR WAIKATO.

We are now enabled to Rive the census returns of the counties of Waikato, Waipa, and Raglan, the borough of Hamilton, and the town district of Cambridge, with cmnpaiative returns for 1881 and 1878. The population of the other towu districts is we presume, included in the respective road district;, since no separate returns have been furnished. The figures are as follow :—: —

The following shows the number of dwelling-houses in the district : — Cambridge Town District . 231 Hamilton Borough 249 Rangiaohia Road District ... 221 Mangapiko Road District ... 159 Cambridge and Tamahere Road District 139 Kirikinroa District . . ... 118 Ranghiri Riding . . . . 140 Kawhia . 35 Karioi and Te Akau 109 Whangape-Onewhero. . . . at Pukekura Road District ... 189 Hamilton Tuhtkaramea Road Districts . . 84 Newcastle Road District") and town of Ngarua- > 121 wahia . ... J Of the total population two are Chinamen, both living in the Borough of Hamilton, 114 half-castes, distributed as follows : — Rangiaohia, 30 ; Karioi and Te Akau, 21; Mang.ipiko, 17; Ranginri, 21; and Cambiidge, 10. The total number of Maori wives is 1(5, 9 at Kawhia, 2 at Kuril >i, 2 at Rangiaohia, 1 at Ngaruawahia, and 2 at Cambridge. From the above it will be seen that though there has been a falling off since 1881, Hamilton still heads the list of towns with a population of 1204, Cambiidge Town District coming next with 1030. Although not a part of the town district, and situated at some distance away, that portion of the Pukekma Road District known as Cambridge West may fairly be claimed as a portion of the township. The addition thus obtained will raise the population of Cambridge to 1278, or 74 above Hamilton, but to the latter's figures must bo added the population of the Frankton and Claudelands town&hips. For these no separate returns have been furnished, but the numbers will be found to be considerably over 150, *»o that Hamilton still heads the list.
