THE LATEST. (Received June 2nd, 1 p.m.) London, June 1.

The cricket match, Australians \. the North of England, commenced to-day on the old Trafford ground, Manchester. The weather was fine during the day, and there was a very large assemblage of spectators, who manifested the keenest interest in the play. The following composed the North of England team :— A. H. Hornby, Lancashire ; Captain ft. G. Barlow, Lancashire ; J. Briggs, Lancashire ; W. Bates, Yorkshire ; W. Gunn, Notts ; R. Pilling, Lancashiie; E. Peate, . Yorkshire ; J. M. Preston, Yorkshire ; A. Shrewsbury, Notts j Ulyett, Yorkshire; A. Watson, Lancashire. The Australians went in first to the wickets, and were all disposed of for 45, the most prominent scorer being Jones, bowled, for 15. Peate's bowling was very destructive, Ue took eight wickets at a cost of 20 run!>. The home team then took their innings, but failed to reach the Australian score, having only totalled 34 when the last wicket fell. In this, as in the precceding innings, the bowlers had a long way the best of it, the wicket being very tieacheroui through the day. Spofforth took 7 wickets for 20 runs, Palmer the remaining three for 10. The visitors then went in for their second innings, and were all put out for 43 runs, Jarvis carrying out his bat for 10, while Garrett placed a like number to his credit bofore being bowled. In this innings Watson took 6 wickets for 10 runs. The Australians then went into field, and when the stumps were drawn, the Home team had lost 1 wicket for 15 runs, thus wanting 40 to win with D wickets to spare. The scores were asfollows : — Australian Eleven : First innings, 45 ; second innings, 43 ; total, 88. North of England: First innings, 34 ; second innings (for one wicket), 15 ; total, 49. Bonnor was injured during the day, and had to retire. The fielding of both the visitors and home team wia excellent, some splendid catches being made on both sides.

The North of England match at Manchester had to be put off to-day on account of the rain. Play will be resumed tomorrow, weather permitting.
