WELLINGTON, Sunday. The captain and officers of the Russian warship were enteit.ained at dinner by the members of the Wellington Club. At the licensing meetings next week, ifc is expected that one hotel in each of theCook and Thorudon Wards will be closed.
OLSBORNE, Sunday. A meeting of the county council was held yesterday to decide upon the course to be taken to recover the money detained by Mr Willonghhy "Brassey, solicitor, who was recently dismissed from the Council's service. The amount is £15.1, and was paid to him on May 10th, on account of l.ites. Mr Brassey cashed the cheque on May 11th. When the demand was made for the money, Mr Brassey said he held it for his costs. He gave a cheque, but said that he had not sufficient funds in hand to meet it, and* his cleik was away with the keys of thesafe. The Council decided that, unless; the money waa paid by noon on Monday,, criminal proceedings be taken.
CHRISTCHURCH,' Sunday. A case of garrotting occurred here ia»t night. A man named Edward Desmond was stuck up on the North Belt by ft number of men, who held him and searched his pockets. Two of them,. Richard Chamberlain and Fred Porter,, both well known to the police, have been arrested,
NAPIER, Sunday. Alexander Browne, formerly draper here, subsequently in Auckland, wa* yesterday brought up at the Police Court on a charge of fraudulent bankruptcy and remanded to Auckland. Pie refused bail though offered, preferring to go in custody. He threatens actions against those, who caused his arrest.
