THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN IN ENGLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH— COPYRIGHT.] [REUTERS TELEGRAMS.]
[KEUTEK's London, May 28. The cricket match, the Australians v. an eleven representing Oxford University, commenced yesterday. There was a good attendance of the public, though the weather was showery. The wicket was heavy owing to recent raina. The following were the players : —University team : Messrs Brain, Buckland, Cobb, Cochrane, Hillyard, Key, Page, Glennie, Rosleigh, Thompson, Whitfcy. The Australians went first to the wickets, the highest scores made being—Jones, caught, 28; Blackhaiu, run out, 15. The others collapsed, and the innings closed for 70. The principal bowlers for the Oxonians were Buckland (four wickets for two runs) and Cochrane (Wo for two runs). The Oxford team in their first innings were all disposed of for 45. The principal scores wero: Page, leg before wicket, 10; Hillyard, caught, 12; Thompson, not out, 11. The bowling of the visitors was dead on the wicket. Spofforth took nine wickets for two runs. The Australians commenced their second innings, and at the close of the day'tt play had put together eight runs for the loss of two wickets.
London, May 29. The attendance on the second day of the Australian v. Oxford University match was good, and the weather was fine. The Australians continued their second innings, which closed for 38 runs. Jones, who was caught when his score reached 10, being the highest. Whitley, for the Oxonians, took five wickets for 20 runs. The home fielding was very good. The University team, requiring 04 to win, went in for their second innings, but were disposed of for 38. Brain was the principal scorer, being bowled for 10. Spofforth took aix wickets for 20. Garrett secured four for 10 runs. Australians : First innings, 70 ; second innings, 38; total, 108. Oxford University : First innnings, 45 ; second inings, 38 ; total, S3. The Australians thus won the match, with 25 runs to spare.
