Shannon has forwarded to His Excellency the Governor his resignation as a nominated member of the Central Board of the Government Insurance Association. Upwards of 700 attended the Governor's birthday ball. The captain and officers of the Russian war vessel were present. It is believed that the manufacturing operations in connection with the Wellington Woollen Factory will be commenced next week. Dr. H. McEwen is a passenger by the Tainui for London. An approximate report on the Maori census snows a decline since last census of 2639. North Island, 39,287 ; South, 2048. Total, 41,332. The population in 1881 was, North, 41,902 ; South, 2069. Total, 43974. The figures are not quite complete, as the Hawke'a Bay returns are not all in, and the Chatham Islands, which last census had a population of 126, are not included. The Native Minister, in laying the report on thn table, laid the returns had been compiled with the utmost care, and were much more accurate than in any previous census. During the discussion on the Justices of the F«ace Bill, Mr Fitzherbert laid he knew a justice in the Hutt district who could not read and write, and when the con* stable applied to him to swear an ordinary information, he took the document upside down, and finally said he would confer with the Minister of Justice on the matter.
