Lovnov, May 17. The result of the tenders for the Austialiftn Federal mail set vice has been made public. The only two companies applying are the Orient Company and the Peninsular and Oriental Company. The Orient Company tenders at 12s per lb. for letters, and a fixed sum of £750 per voyage in lieu of charges on books and newspapers. The Peninsular and Oriental Company declines to tender by weight, but ia willing to undertak*» th» required service for a subsidy of £115,000 per annum for a contract extending over seven years, or £100,000 per annum for a pe-iod of ten years. The Colonial Institute will hold a conference in connection with the Exhibition in June. The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company have declared a dividend for the past half-year at the rate of 5 per cent, per annum. Madrid, May 17. Her Majesty the Queen Repent of Spain was safely delivered of a son to-day. The match, Australians v. Nottingham County, which was to have commenced todny, on the Trent Bridge ground, at Nottingham, was prevented by heavy rain. The East and West Coast Railway Syndicate have paid a deposit of £5000 to Sir F. Dillon Bell, Agent-General for New Zealand, in connection with their contract. Sir Arthur Blyth and Sir Samuel Davenport ad vise that the Jubileo Exhibition which is to be held in South Australia should be made a Government concern. Count Herbert Bismarck has replaced Count Hat/.feldt as German Ambassador at the Court of St. James. The London warehouses, which have been boycotted by the shipping ring, have decided to despatch numerous commercial travellers to Australia in the interest of their houses. The Australian mails dated Melbourne, April 18, per Parmmatta, were delivered to-day via Brindisi. May 18. Germany is about to reinforce Alsace and Lorraine. 1 Tbo seizure of a third American fiahiog smack bv the Nova Scutiuns has again caused afeeliajjof irritation in America. The death is announced, aged 71, of Sir Thoinas Erskine May, late clerk of the Honao,of Commons. The New Zealand Government are arranging for the establishment of a parcel post by their direct steam service.
