TE AROHA.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 Te Aroha. Friday. Thk important work of connecting the Waiorongomai mining district with the Tui Creek: by means of a road along the top of the range is likely «»»n to be carried out. The proposal made at the last meeting of the Piako County Council, lolative to that work has been submitted to the Ohineinuri Council, and has received the favourable consideration of that body. Both are agreed as to the necessity of having the track made, and a* soon a« the assistance of the Government is assured matters will take a practical shape, lne work, when completed will open up in each county a considerable extent of auriferous country; and will otherwise bo of much benefit to thn miners, and also to visitors, who will be enabled by its means to m■pec,t,the claims in both localities in one day, 1 ft task which cannot at present be done in less than two. A meeting of the residents, convened by advertisement, wan held in the Public Hall on Wednesday evening, for the purpose of electing an improvement committee for the ensuing year, and to cousider the adviHaßmty of requesting the Piako County Council to strike a separate rate for road and other works within the Aroha riding. The chair was occupied by Mr J. Mills, who spoke at some length on the matters they had met to discusn. The report of the outgoing committee was read, and a cordial vote of thanks was passed to the members for thoir services during thfir term of office. A new committee wts then elected, and comprises the following members:— Messrs Mills, Kobson, Frazer, Ahier, Mackie, Dobson, Comes, and Blencowe. A discussion n«t took place as to the necessity for striking the separate rate, but most of those present were averse to the proposal, and on a motion being put to the meeting that the rate bo struck, it waa negatived by a considerable majority. The right to the overflow from the springs, obtained from the Domain Board sometime since by Mr Geo. Kobaon, has been dispesed of by him to a Melbourne company. At a meeting of the board on Wednesday the transfer of the right was agreed to, but the terms of the arrangement have been slightly altered. The lease is now given for ten years, and instead of the royalty, which was to have been paid by Mr Robson, a fixed charge of .one penny per gallon will be expected from the new company. It is expected that the revenue from the source will, before long, increase the income of the board to the extent of from two to three pounds per week, , an addition that will be of material helaEin carrying out the many improvemenfaVthat are yet required within the domain. The fame of the Aroha mineral water is likely now to be soon spread widely abroad, as the proprietors intend to introduce it as a beverage in all the principal towns of New Zealand and Australia." That distressing complaint, whooping cough, is at present very prevalent among the children here, and the school attendance has in consequence been considerably reduced. At a committee meeting yesterday a recommendation was ,majie to the hend teacher to strictly carry out the 87th clause of the Education Act, which empowers him to forbid the attendance of ehilHren suffering from contagions ailmerits. It was also resolved that the secretary be instructed to submit the circumstances to the Board of Education, and to request that the teacher's and other allowances be based on the returns of last quarter.
