THE DEPRESSION IN LONDON. AN INFLAMMATORY SPEECH.
Thk Anglo-New Zealander, referring to the prevailing depression in London, state 3 that some of the speeches at meetings of the unemployed were of an exceedingly inflammatory character. It gives aa a sample the following remarks by Mr John Burns, the Socialist candidate for Nottingham at the general election :— " They tell you there is a Garden of Eden in America and a Garden of Eden in Australia. But meetings like this are held there, too, and only the other day the unemployed workmen of Sydney — braver men than you cowards are — went in a body to the mayor and told him that if any more labourers were brought from England while they starved they would throw a bottle of dynamite into the Assembly Hall ! We know very well that the first persons to be crushed by the car of revolution are those who first harness themselves in front of it. We know it, and we do not fear. Better a sudden death than to be dragged slowly to a pauper's grave?" Burns, it is said, had. been out since five in tho morning -wandering about London looking for work.
