The Daily Alta California declares that "people would have more faith in the future of the Australian colonies if 'the colonists thou.ht more of ih'eir own country and less of their Mother Country. England is great and glorious, no doubt, but servile imitation of English institutions and English ways and manners and habits of thought are not calculated to develop those robust energies which create nations. The Australian cities all look like little English towns dropped by mistake upon an island in the Pacific The newspapers are all copies of the London Times in make-up and style. The articles, correspondence, -reports, all look as if they had been written Jn England ; one has to look at the head of the paper to see that one is not reading the Manchester Guardian, Liverpool Times. They are porhaps toae the worse for being English, but copyist seldom achieve success. Australia could afford, one might suppose, to grow a people of her own, with a spirit and a mind racy of the soil." Yes !It is certainly true. Ask any of your friends who bave purchased thei c.
