THE HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— ln your report of the meeting of delegates held at Hamilton on the 22nd inst., which Appears in your Saturday's issue, I am made to say "That I proposed a resolution because Hamilton had been mentioned as a site." This is clearly a tniHtake. The question of site in discussing the matter did not for a in«ment trouble me ; it was the expense, and both in my resolution .aid my remarks I tried to bhow this but as time and the train wait for no man I was obliged to leave the meeting hurriedly, and was thus prevented from explaining myself more fully. I still think that before establishing a hospital in the district we should take the ratepayers into our confidence and obtain an expression of opiuton from them. I cannot allow Cr. 'Seddon's remarks, "that Waipa county had taken up a singular position," to pass unnoticed. The Waipa council has refused to pay £430, and stands pledged with other councils to resist payment and also* to petition for an amendment of the Act. What more can be expected from Waip»7 I must confess I was disappointed that the questions of how to rcbist payment, how to obtain the 25 per cent, of our subsidies which the Government is keeping from w, and in "what way to amend the Act, were not considered. Let in supjwse Parliament will not alter the Act to make '• Waikato " a separate district. In such case should not our representatives .and those of all other count ly districts endeavour to get the rating clauses amended, making it on a population bi«w instead of rateable value as at present. I would suggest that the Waikato Council prepare a draft of a petition to be pi evented to Parliament, and submit it to all the councils who have agreed to join, so that it may b% considered and bo ready when the House opens next month.— l am, &c, F. C. Germann, Chairman Waipa County Council. [Mr Germsnn c^rtiinly used the words imputed to him, though it h possible the natural inference to be drawn from them was not in his mind. — Ed.]
