MR BALLANCE AND THE NATIVES. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Alexandra, April 17.
The Native Minister, the Hon Mr Ballance, and staff left here this morning, somewhat unexpectedly, as it was generally understood he would have remained until midday at least for a final interview with Tawhiao, There was a consultation going on at Whatiwhatihoe all day between Tawhiao and his people, considering the propositions made by the Government to Tawhiao thtough the Native Minister, but no definite conclusion was arrived at, so the Native Minister lost nothing by leaving. At the meeting at W hatiwhatihoe between the Native Minister and Tawhiao it was Mr George Brown who acted as interpreter in all the proceedings that took place, not Mr Wilkinson as appears in your last issue the latter gentleman having acted in that capacit at the Kopua meeting with Wahanui and his people. # During the Native Minister's visit, he was waited upon by Mr Farrell, Chairman of the Kihikihi Highway Board, respecting the approaches being formed to the Funiu Bridge. Mr Ballance promisedto re-coro-mend that the work be done at once, he south side to be done by native labour, and the others by tender. Another thing will give pleasure to the many friends of Sergt-Major McGovern. That gentleman, is to be promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector, and have charge of the Kawhia district which will be a separate one. AH will agree this promotion has not come too soon, and will only lament it was not given him in the district he has served so long, and, satisfactorily.
Mr John Knox will hold his usual sale of produre, fowls, turkejrs, &c, at the Hamilton Auction Mart on Saturday* A Lady's Wiih.— " Oh, how I do wish my skin was as clear and sofc as yours !" said a lady to a. friend. You can easily m«ke it so, answered the friend. " How ?" inquired the first lady. "By usinif Dr. Soule's »'op Bitters, that makes pure rich blood and blooroinr health. It did it for me, as you observe." Read
