OHINEMURI GOLDFIELD. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Waihi. Paeuoa, Friday. Silveuton.— Tho lotel now being dtiven u|wn the cro.ss lode is 40 feet from the winze, which, is down GO feet, about the same level as tho drive. Something like 1501b 5 ! of specimens have come to hand since my last, and there ia every piohpect of picked btone occuriing in tho workings all through the 40 feet of reef that connects the drive with the winze. Shareholders in this mine are to be congratulated. To show how deceptive some kind of quartz may be, this mine was thrown up by several experienced diggers some years ago, after expending a tremendous lot of money and labour (for poor men) in putting in a 300 ft. drive through country not amenable to pick and shovel. Thih was of course during the reign of the battery process, when the average miner looked upon chemical processes much the same as a Roundhead would regard witchcraft. Even at this more enlightened time, after the ad\ent of Professor Black and tl)B Messiah of the Furnace. La Monte, there are those who are deemed learned in metals, even the experts of the La Monte furnace at the Thames, who "reckon the Silverton quaartz the darnedest hungry look'n dirt ever they sot eyes on." These men, beside numberless other atnnteurs and piofessionals in metallurgy, had a "sliu up" when it became known that the specimen atone was worth, with what was left in tho tailings, half an ounce good gold to < tho pound, and the gennal ditt £25 per ton. Union.— About 170 or 180 ton* general ditt of good quality are to grass, and about 70 tons are at the Martha battery awaiting water.
Karangahake. Woodstock. — It is to be hoped that next week will witness the smoke from the furnace chimney. While glancing over Han«aid for September ku>t, I noticed that in i the debate upon the £1000 bonus to Mr La Monte for his introduction of new machinery, that one hon. niomber for a goldfield observed that theOhinemuii furnace would start in October. It is to be hoped that the hon. gentleman did not mean next Octi ber. In tho Maria portion of the Wo<>dslock mine the precious metal is freely \ isible in the grain of the stone. In the quartz there are brownish and blucish veins with sometimes a few tiny crystals. This is the stone, at lea»t in Ohineinuii, that carries the metal and is what should .be looked for by tho»e who are prospecting in the \Vaikato. Theie is also a soapy look that in indicative of silver.
General News. Mr L. M, Grace has again written from Taupo, where he is detained on public and private business at the Native Land Court, stating that he will be here in a week or two, and will then make ft stay in the district for a while. Tom Thumb has been holding levees in the district during the last two or three days. He is a most amusing little fellow, advertised as being 15 years old. Apart from hia size, he is really a clever young mimic, vocalising, reciting, and flirting in a manner to be envied by many twice his age and ten times his weight. He is also an accomplished boxer. The Ohinemuri County Council's board of work* have just returned from a trip to the Waitoa poi tion of the county, where they meditate making some additions to the county roads. This part of the county is "so near and yet so far," being almost next door to Paeroa, but owing to swamp and bush a detour of about 22 miles h.is to be made iv order to reach it. Mr F. Strange, member for that riding, is agitating to get a road made through the swamp, and certainly deserves all he aiks, nnd will probably get it.
