THE WHATIWHATIHOE MEETING The Natives and the Governor.
[from our own correspondent. I Alexandra, April 7. The Whatiwhatihoe deputation left for Auckland yesterday, with full instructions from Tawhiao and other chiefs, as to what they sfytyitd $ay to Governor Jervois. They are to obtain if po«jbto, a reply fca their petition, and to be particularly strong on the question of the treaty of \Vaitangi. This appears their main-stay, and all present at the meeting seem determined if possible that its conditions shall be fulfilled. Several of tbe speakers at the meeting were quite serious in pioposing ■ending other chiefs to an.4 sjfielcing redress there. They argue that public feeling there is with them, and that they have friends in the Government who will yet insist on the New Zealand Government doing the right thing with them. Yesterday's mooting was engaged the. whole day
going over thp 1800 odd of natives of diifcicut hapus ami tnlx-s, who have handed th'-u lui>l<ovri loTanhiao, and with the people concerned in the Puahos and Pukekma l>ln(.k-> which have caused bo much tioubU» to Mh»«<is (iiice .and Co. in the courts <>f 1 «w. There has also been c-oiMdcr.ible t.ilkinp about petting a prc-s of their own, as they say the Pakoli.v papers aio continually declining to publish cominunic itions that the native* send to them. Paul Tuh.iero is a htrong ad\(ic.»te for the Pre>s, which he told the meeting was the mightiest engine in the world. Paul has gone to town, to keep a fatherly eye on the member* of the deputation to the Governor. A grent many have now left for their homes, but a number of the old people will remain until the return of their delegate* from Auckland.
